Our Journey

Founded in 1969, the Soil Science Society of Sri Lanka (SSSSL) serves as the primary professional body dedicated to strengthening the capacity of soil scientists and promoting sustainable soil management across the island. A major leap forward in the society's history was the 1995 commencement of the SRICANSOL project, a twinning initiative with the Soil Science Society of Canada that established a comprehensive national soil database and detailed mapping for the Wet and Intermediate zones. This landmark project utilized modern Soil Taxonomy and FAO classifications to provide essential data for environmentally sustainable land-use planning. As a proud member of the International Union of Soil Science (IUSS), the SSSSL continues to bridge local expertise with global standards, focusing on addressing critical issues like soil erosion and groundwater pollution while embracing recent technological developments to ensure a sustainable agri-environmental future for Sri Lanka.

Landmarks in Our History

The SSSSL was founded as the premier professional forum to strengthen the capacity of soil scientists and promote the science of soil management across Sri Lanka.
The society published an updated soil map and the seminal "Handbook of Soils of Sri Lanka," successfully aligning local Great Soil Groups with USDA Soil Taxonomic equivalents.
In partnership with the Soil Science Society of Canada, this twinning project was launched to modernize the national soil database and improve classification standards.
The society delivered detailed soil maps at scales of 1:250,000 and 1:40,000 for the Wet and Intermediate Zones, providing a foundational database for land-use planning.
As a proud member of the International Union of Soil Science (IUSS), the society continues to link Sri Lankan expertise with global scientific standards.
The society is currently evolving to address 21st-century challenges, such as soil erosion and groundwater pollution, by integrating recent technological developments in remote sensing and digital soil mapping.
